Description
The Monstera, which has many other names, such as the ‘Swiss Cheese Plant, ‘Cheese Plant’ or ‘Split Philodendron (although it is not a Philodendron), is so well known as a houseplant that we even use the leaf in our logo.
Traditionally native to Mexico, the Monstera is also successfully grown as a houseplant in temperate climates. Nearly all the varieties of Monstera have become incredibly popular amongst houseplant enthusiasts for their ease of care and distinctive leaf patterns. There are, incidentally, a couple of theories to explain the holes and split leaf design, being that these enable water to get at the roots of the plant and that they protect them during strong winds.
Monsteras enjoy bright, indirect light and increased humidity, so make sure you give them regular misting or make a humidity tray for them. They also like to be watered approximately once every week or so, with reduced amounts in Winter time. Yellowing leaves can be a sign of over watering, but they can also warn you of this by ‘sweating’ excess water off the leaves. So don’t worry: if a Monstera is in trouble they will tell you about it! That said, these aren’t particularly fussy plants so are ideal for beginners and veterans alike.
